ICN User Responsibilities

General Information

All Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) CRYPTOCards and CRYPTOCard personal identification numbers (PINs) must be protected. You are responsible for proper handling and storage of your CRYPTOCard and PIN.

What DOE and the Laboratory expect of you

DOE and LANL require you not to share your unique identifier (ICN user ID and CRYPTOCard PIN). You must comply with the LANL/DOE computer security policy and procedures including keeping you computer security training current.

All Laboratory computers, computing systems, and their associated communication systems are to be used for official business only. By signing for a CRYPTOCard, you agree not to misuse the ICN and you accept responsibility for activity associated with your user ID and CRYPTOCard. You also agree not to duplicate or use copyrighted or proprietary software without proper authorization. The Laboratory can and will audit your files to ensure that you abide by these rules.

How to Protect your CRYPTOCard PIN

  • Protect your CRYPTOCard PIN as sensitive information.
  • Memorize your PIN instead of writing it down.
  • Protect your CRYPTOCard and PIN from unauthorized use. Do not allow anyone to use them to access LANL computers.
  • Don't let others watch you enter your PIN.

There is no such thing as a shared CRYPTOCard/PIN, not even for reading e-mail. Other mechanisms exist for sharing information.

Failure to properly protect your CRYPTOCard or PIN will result in interruption and possible suspension of your computing privileges. Also, when deemed appropriate, disciplinary action will follow. This disciplinary action includes administrative reprimand, security infraction, or even termination and/or prosecution.

Contact the Help Desk (505-665-4444) if:

  • You think your CRYPTOCard PIN has been compromised.
  • Your CRYPTOCard is lost or stolen.
  • You have forgotten your CRYPTOCard PIN.
